STUDIO_X

is the creative platform of X_YUSUF_BOSS, where new voices in dance, music, and performance are given the space to grow, experiment, and connect. It is open to self-taught artists, emerging makers, and anyone with a story that needs to be heard, regardless of background or training.

Under STUDIO_X, we create space for the exchange and development of unseen talents around us. We focus on young people who move within and are shaped by hip-hop culture across disciplines like dance, music, photography, and film. Through accessible programming, we aim to foster self-sufficiency and resilience while building community. Our goal is to connect groups of young creatives, especially those unfamiliar with traditional cultural infrastructures, and offer a platform for those who haven't yet been recognized.

Our activities span different levels, from weekly sessions and workshops to residencies and international collaborations, and are guided by four core pillars.

Talent development STUDIO_X supports artists at the early stages of their practice. We offer time, space, and mentorship to help makers deepen their work and explore their own voice. Through residencies, open studios, and workshops, we create room to take risks, try new ideas, and grow artistically without the pressure of instant results.

ExchangeWhether through local collaborations or international residencies, STUDIO_X is a space for dialogue. We believe that artistic development thrives when cultures, disciplines, and perspectives meet. Past exchanges include collaborations with collectives from the UK, South Africa, and beyond. We are building bridges that extend across borders and scenes.

Community
STUDIO_X is rooted in the belief that creativity does not happen in isolation. We create an open and accessible environment where artists, audiences, and neighbors come together. Our weekly Open Studio sessions in Groningen invite young people to dance, make music, and share their stories. It is about showing up, supporting each other, and growing together.

EmpowermentEverything we do is driven by the idea that expression is power. We work from the values of hip-hop culture: each one teach one, community first, speak your truth. STUDIO X centers voices that are often unheard and creates space for makers to reclaim their narrative, take ownership, and inspire change through their art.

What we do

Weekly Open Studios in Groningen

Every Thursday, we open our studio for young people to exchange and learn through music and dance. Each session includes a 1.5-hour music workshop and a 1.5-hour dance workshop, led by members of our team, including DJs, dancers, composers, and producers. These sessions are low-threshold and community-driven. We also collaborate with Roodkopje, a hip-hop event held bi-monthly at Simplon.

Professional Development Track

For those who want to take it a step further, we support a group of motivated young makers toward a public presentation.  This can be during Unfinished Business at Grand Theatre or during the Jonge Harten Festival in the fall. Over several weeks, they work intensively with a professional maker from our team or another network. The group is intentionally diverse in background, experience, and perspective, and the process focuses on developing their own artistic language.

Urban Arts Development Trajectory

Each year, we support one emerging artist through a tailored development process as part of the Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie’s Urban Arts trajectory. These artists often come from within our network or have been involved in earlier projects. We provide artistic and business coaching and support their grant applications and project design. Previous participants include Juersson Hermanus (dancer/choreographer) and Salman Dirir (dancer/videographer).

Through these initiatives, we aim to nurture and highlight the immense talent within our community, providing them with the tools and platforms to thrive.
